Working with WordPress in IIS – Permalink Issues

    So for the first time, I’m trying to set up WordPress on a server running Windows/IIS. Good news is, I’ve got it at least working. But the permalinks issue is driving me crazy.

    Before anybody asks, yes, I have been working through the options described in Using Permalinks. I tried this ISAPI filter, but either the filter didn’t load on the website I needed it to or WordPress would just tell me the page I was trying to access didn’t exist, even when I switched permalink structures in the Admin area. This solution looks promising, but I think I first need to get past the issue I describe below.

    For some reason, my WordPress install seem to be “stuck” in ?p=Number mode. When I switch permalinks structures to a PATHINFO structure, or to anything else, WordPress tells me that the pages simply don’t exist, period end. This is frustrating because most solutions out there seem to at least require me to be on a PATHINFO structure before I can do anything further. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does anyone else have some suggestions?

    (I’m using IIS 6.0, by the way.)

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I’ve had this problem for over a year now and I have not found a solution. In short, I have been living with the UGLY permalinks for that period of time.

    The good news is that it had not affected my Google ranking at all. True, my links are cryptic, but it is also shorter.

    Good luck with your search. I have accepted a long time ago that my blog will always have UGLY links. Too late to change it now with over 1000 posts.

    You can only use pathinfo-type permalinks on IIS if PHP and IIS is configured to allow it. That isn’t the case in all circumstances.

    We don’t support IIS around here much because almost nobody actually uses it. My recommendation would be to switch to a Linux/Apache hosting. If you have to run Windows, get Apache for Windows instead. That’s almost as good as running Linux.

    Try a different URL rewriting plugin. I’ve had pretty good luck with this one (haven’t tried it with WordPress though):

    Sorry to hear that, Sheiglagh. Glad to hear that it hasn’t hurt your Google rank, though. That’s (admittedly) one of my prime concerns here.

    I wish I could, but it just isn’t an option in this case. The site that I’m setting this up for also uses ASP.Net, so I’m more or less stuck with the current setup.

    I know this is an old thread, but I’m running into this problem again.

    The weird thing is, I have an old windows 2000 web server that is running wordpress, and permalinks work great. I can change them to whatever I want, and it works.

    I haven’t (if my memory serves me well) used any type of 404 redirections or using any third-party re-write tools of any kind. It just works.

    Now, I’m trying to figure out what I did, so that I can implement the same solution for a client with a SBS 2003 server, and it has not been fun so far…

    Anybody know why 2000 server works and 2003 doesn’t?
