• As of the last couple weeks, every time I hit the Facebook share button for the first time on a post, I get a “Please copy & paste the URL if the app did not open: (gives post url)” warning. It counts down a few seconds, and then the regular share window opens okay.

    The next time I try it, and from then on, this does not happen.

    We’re using a Nginx server. Any idea what could be causing this?

    Don’t know if this helps, but when inspecting the element in the share window, these errors show up in the Console tab:
    Empty string passed to getElementById().1qslXljjIop.js:72:125
    window.controllers is deprecated. Do not use it for UA detection.sharer.php

    Thanks for any help.

    As explained in AddToAny’s FAQ on Facebook sharing (the 5th one), Facebook scrapes a page upon sharing, which takes at least an extra moment. Subsequent shares of the same page are cached by Facebook, so they’re faster.

    AddToAny’s “copy & paste” utility simply kicks in after a period of time as a helpful fallback for when an app doesn’t automatically (or quickly) load for a user.

    But, as I say, it only just started happening. There seems to be a delay that wasn’t there before. Any idea what could cause that?
