Hello all ?? Thanks for reading me.
I hope I am in the right category for requesting new plugins or enhancements.

The theme I am using right now is a theme from Obox, Ink drop. This theme displays manual excerpts in the top of articles, when they are written. And it’s an option a really enjoy… But not for all my type of articles.
This is why I am here today to request for an add-on, that could maybe be useful to other WP users. Would it be possible to choose :
1 – if YES or NO the excerpt of each article should be displayed on the article itself’s page (before the content text).
2 – if YES or NO the excerpt of each article should be displayed on the category, archive and search page (instead of the truncated content).

Indeed, I really need to choose, either for each article, either for all articles of each category, where the excerpt text should be displayed (on the article’s page OR on the category/archive/search pages OR both).

Please do not hesitate to ask me for more information if my request is not clear enough ! I’m not a native english speaker and it may be difficult for me to express myself accurately…
Thanks a lot to anyone that would take the time to answer !
    Ma?l.

  • That sort of thing is easily possible, but it’s 100% theme territory. The reason for that is that it’s only uses for a set of sites, not the majority, and it’s all about display, not data handling. It’s not hard to modify a theme to do what you’re asking (using a child theme of course), it’s just a few files to change or add in.

Thanks for your reply ! Oh, that is great then ! Could you help me do that ?
What would be perfect for me would be something like that :
    – Give an option on the WP admin article posting page (for example a tick box) saying if YES or NO you want to display the hand-written excerpt (when it’s written) on category/tag/archive/search pages. This option could be on the “edit category” page instead of the article posting page (which means it could be applicable to all the articles of a category).
    – Give another option on the WP admin article posting page (could still be a tick box) saying if YES or NO you want to display the hand-written excerpt (when it’s written) on the article’s page itself, above the content (a place is already made for that on the theme I am using). This option could be on the “edit category” page instead of the article posting page (which means it could be applicable to all the articles of a category).

Would that be possible without so much efforts ?
Thanks a lot for answering anyway ! ??

As you’re using a commercial theme it’s hard ot say exactly how to do it. No one here has access to the themes code or workings, so we would only be guesing about how it’s put togehter.

What you’re asking is also not quite so “quick and easy”. While it’s not that complicated, it is too much to go into on a suppor tthread like this. You’d be best off trying ot od some things and asking questions when you get stuck.

For a general idea of what you’ll need to do, have a look at the add_meta_box() function and the save_post action to set up the various option areas for your post types.

Hum… Even going through my admin CP you wouldn’t have access to the theme code ?

Well, if what I am askink is not so “quick and easy” then, would it be much easier to, at least, make the first one ? (“Give an option on the WP admin article posting page (for example a tick box) saying if YES or NO you want to display the hand-written excerpt (when it’s written) on category/tag/archive/search pages. This option could be on the “edit category” page instead of the article posting page (which means it could be applicable to all the articles of a category).”)

Actually I will need to display the hand-written excerpt on category/tag/archive/search pages for one category only… Maybe I could even precise which one in the code directly, without having any tick boxes or options, and that could reduce the amount of work ?

Not really. If you’re doing it for one area it can be used for any other area.

This is one of those times when you will really need ot either roll up your sleeves and do some work yourself, or considering hiring someone to do it for you.

    Oh, okay I understand !
I would have another suggestion as well… I think that “aside posts” do not have any special skin, on the theme I am using. Instead of putting this excerpt “YES or NO” option, would it be easier to customize my aside post appearance ?
So that on the category/search/tag/archive pages, it displays the excerpt text ? (Actually, I would even need to display only the excerpt text and the publication date. I do not want the title, or the number of comments, to be displayed)

Do you think that would be easier ?
