ssl is expensive

If you are storing sensitive user information it is always a good idea to have an SSL for your website. Even Google is now giving ranking boosting to websites using SSL certificates.

It can, like you say, be quite costly. There are also some free SSL certificates that you can get online, check out https://www.sslforfree.com/

I have not personally used it myself but my fellow support engineer has used it on his own site.

If you feel a bit uncomfortable with the site, might I suggest doing a bit of a Google search, I believe there are a few sites that now offer free SSL certificates.

Perhaps you find one that is better suited for you.

Just to add what Travis has said the sslforfree.com is legit as it uses letsencrypt.org to generate the SSL certificate for you.

Let’s Encrypt does seem like a great free option and a fairly high level on encryption but you still can’t compare it to a paid encryption certificate. If it’s for basic use, it will get the job done. (Only down side is you must renew it every quarter – other than that it’s free and awesome!)

I use cloudflare.com. A free account offers both SSL and CDN caching. You need a couple of Cloudflare plugins to make it work. Cloudflare and CTW SSL for Cloudflare
