too many line breaks

ok, so ive got wp installed and more or less designed. My problem is at the beginning of each entry theres a paragraph tag, its not in my index but is in my souce.IT creates too much space before and after the entry. I figure it has to do with the_content() but i dont know which file to edit to rid myself of this problem.
