Can I run multiple blogs off one WP installation

    I have an existing blog and would like to create a second one. They have separate domains but because of the way my hosting works they are all hosted off one plan so I could potentially share the WP installation for both blogs.

    My question is whether this is possible and how to do it? They would have separate content and use different themes, and if worst came to worst I have the space to instal the software 2x but I thought it would be more efficient to use the same software and somehow tell it that there are multiple blogs?

  • Short answer: no, WordPress doesn’t work that way. Each blog should have its own installation.

    Other answer: if you want to run multiple sites from one installation, you could look at WordPress MU.

    A couple more questions!

    1. If I use mu will it recognise my existing installation of the first blog?
    2. I installed using Fantastico and it doesn’t seem to want to instal a second lot of the software. To install a second time should I copy and paste all the wordpress files to a new directory or would that not work?

    Hmmm I just looked in mu and it says

    You should have a good foundation with: Php; Mysql, and not just PhpMyAdmin, but command line as well; HTML; CSS; Server Administration and configuration, Note that the download page says APACHE, the ability to use tools like the error_log in Apache, other error logs (mail, etc), and be able to look up common error messages through google

    I’m non techie so I’m not sure it’s a good plan for me to use mu

    can i copy the existing installation onto a new directory or do i have to start with a fresh copy of the wp instal files?
