• I have no idea what this plugin is supposed to do and I seriously doubt any of my users would understand it either, even if they cared to try. I was given the impression by discussion on Buddypress.org that this adds fields to be filled out by the admin of a group. At the very least I know what it doesn’t do.

    Actually, it does. You need to read the tutorial that is bundled with the plugin (in its admin area).

    yes the field are set up in the Manage / Extras group admin section and they are populated within the Manage / Details group admin section

    I can get the fields created fine, but when I populate the field and click save, the field is empty. I tried it with two different user accounts. One is the admin of the group and the other is the admin of the site.
