• Using this I identified one slow plugin and have replaced it with a newer, quicker one. But the interesting thing is it indicated that it’s the WP core file admin-ajax.php which is slowing down the site rather than any of the plugins!

    Hi shard2,

    Thanks for the kind words.

I wanted to provide a bit more background on admin-ajax.php. This file is a common endpoint for ajax calls. WordPress functions like auto saving posts use this to communicate with WordPress without refreshing your browser. Plugins use this, too. If you saw admin-ajax.php at the very beginning or very end of the session, then it was probably P3 turning itself on/off.

    Hope this helps!

Kurt, many thanks for the extra explanation!

Yes, it was at the end of the report but my reason for running the scan was because lately I’ve been getting frequent ‘out of memory’ errors on publishing posts. The admin-ajax.php thing led me to look that up and discover about the WordPress Heartbeat, which could be a factor in this problem, so it’s all good stuff!
