Pages & Posts Suddenly Getting 404 Page

  • I’ve searched the forums and have found similar problems to mine, but no solution. For several days on this new site for my client, the pages and posts were working just fine. Now, in the admin panel, it shows that the 24 pages are published, but I can’t get to them anymore. If I click on Published Pages (24), it says “no pages found” below. My page driven menu on the index page still shows the links, but all get 404, and new posts/pages are not available either. The last thing I did before the problem showed up was delete the “uncategorized” category. Now that category still shows in the Categories list, but with no check box to the left.

    I exported the contents of the site, and the data is there for the pages and posts. I’m concerned about importing it back in and creating duplicate contents and making the problem worse.

    Things I have tried that didn’t solve the problem:
    – checked the .htaccess file permissions. Turns out it needed to be set to 666, but that didn’t fix the problem.
    – changed the permalinks back to default, and then back to the structure that had been working fine: /%category%/%postname%/

    The URLs are not /category/postname/

    I’m not quite sure what’s going on, but on the homepage, the first link in the sidebar for example, is https://airadis.com/service1.html if I try to type what I assume the address for that post is https://airadis.com/services/service1.html or something like that, the sidebar link changes – are they relative links?

    Can’t be sure, but either the links aren’t coded right or something very screwy is going on with the permalinks.

    Randa, is there anything in the .htaccess that is rewriting the URL incorrectly? I’ve tried a variety of links to get a post to display properly but none of the combinations work.

    As kristarella noted, I too saw some links that were not coded properly. For instance, if I navigate to About Us -> In the News then all of the sidebar links build out from that directory. But I think that is a secondary problem right now.

    Randa, did you check the post slugs? When you manage the posts in WordPress, you said you can see them all as published. Did you compare the URIs there with the ones on the site links? Can you Preview the published posts from WordPress Admin?

    I’m sorry – the links in the sidebar are just dummied up right now, they wouldn’t work anyway. It’s the nav below the search box at the top that is driven by wp_list_pages. You can see that I added a “Test Page” last night and it shows up in the nav. But if you click on any page in that nav, it just goes straight to the 404 page.

    I can see that the posts and pages are published by the count listed, but they don’t show up in the list below and I can’t preview them- see screenshot: https://randaclay.com/screenshotair.png

    Oddly, I can get the two test posts to show up by clicking on the category listed in the footer or on the 404 page, but the page layout for the blog page is goofed up.

    Have you tried validating? I’m not saying it’ll solve all your problems, but it might solve the weird layout on the category pages…

    speaking of which, I can see those test posts on their category pages, but not on their own pages – weird.

    Stumped… sorry ?? Do you have a local installation that you can copy the database and theme to see if it still has the same problems? I have one if you want me to try.

    Thanks, yes, I have one. It’s definitely something within the WordPress installation itself, rather than the design. The admin panel should show my published pages and posts and I can’t get to them.

    This has been resolved, though I’m still not sure of the cause. It may have happened because I erroneously tried to deleted the “uncategorized” category. Anyway, I did an export of the site, wiped out the installation of WP and started again after making sure the export file worked on my test site- no problem, all the posts and pages were editable and working. When I reinstalled WP and imported the XML file back in on the client site though, the problem persisted. So, we wiped it again and this time re-set up everything manually, rather than using the XML file, and it all works fine.

    I’m puzzled as to why the export file worked fine on my test site (same version of WP, etc.), as it seems there was some “corruption” of the data, but I’m just happy the site is working again.
