• Hi all you Podpress lovers out there. Wanted to let you all know that I’ve made the jump off of PodPress. It seems as if the last release was in 2007 and the plug in is conflicting with my other plugins, like Subscribe2 and PostRatings. So, I have jumped ship to the Podcasting plugin for WordPress by CaveMonkey 50.

You can get this plugin here.

It seems this plugin is being supported, as well as other important plugins developed by this developer.

It has iTunes support, so that’s not an issue. You have a player, but you don’t have the links to download the podcast directly from underneath the player like you do in PodPress. You also don’t have the download count either, but you can customize the look and feel of the player, which is similar to podpress.

Instead of allowing people to download directly, I created a Feedburner Feed and posted it directly underneath the podcast player, that way people could subscribe and download it to iTunes if they needed to.

So…although I loved PodPress, I’m not going to miss the issues and lack of support. I’m sure the developer tried his best, but if there’s no communication, then you just have to move onward and upward.

Hope my post helps others figure out what to do after PodPress. Was a great plugin. I hope someone picks it up and continues development.

    Best,

    Tony Z.

  • Thanks for the recommendation and giving your reasons.

I’m sticking with PodPress, but I will try the other one from cavemonkey on a different site. I like the “Play In Pop Up | Download” choices PodPress lets me give listeners.

On my first-look at Cavemonkey podcasting, the FAQ seems to explain that you need to click “Send To Editor” and then save the post with code-in-it for embedding the podcast player each post? Whereas PodPress, you just add the media file URL, and it automatically puts the player (in the place you’ve specified in the options).

Personally I think the communication and support is ok. You know PodPress has their own forum?

I kind of wish some of the duplicated efforts could go to working together, but I’m glad there are options for podcasting. “Competition” can make it better for all.

well..thanks for the recommendation. I love podpress and hate to leave it behind. But The Voodoo Empire relies heavily on podpress for posting DJ sets, and it’s not compatible with WP2.6, so until it gets fixed, I need a fix. I’m gonna try the Cavemonkley one…I need something!

PodPress 8.9 is under development…. Seek3r announced that it would be released within 10 days (he said this a couple days ago!) and has posted progress reports & a request for bug reports on the MightySeek forum

So far PodPress is still the best!

podpress is the best. I am using the other plugin until its back, then I will definately switch back!

So has podpress been updated yet? I don’t know why somebody doesn’t take over the project, since there are literally thousands of wordpress blogs that use this vital plug-in.

@feastoffools, that’s pretty harsh. Seek3r, the guy who makes PodPress and has put 100’s of hours of his time volunteering to do it — has generously released the code as open source.

You know about “open source” right?

You can’t really do a hostile “take over” of the guy’s plugin, but you can modify it and release your own version with a different name. That strikes me as extremely generous of him. Or just ask Seek3r if you want to contribute and help him with the work he’s already doing, because I bet a bigger team of coders could get more done on it. You don’t even have to start from scratch if you want to make a competing plugin — just take PodPress and improve it if you think you can (anyone). This has been the case for more than a year and no one else stepped up yet, so don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Seek3r does what he wants and he can release new versions when he wants, so suggesting that someone try to take this away from him is just wrong.

Notice that Seek3r is still working on Podpress on a frequent basis (PP 8.9 to be released soon), and while everyone else in the entire world has equal rights to improve & re-release this code, not 1 other person has had the cojones, brains, energy, to modify it.

If we didn’t have seek3r doing this, we would have practically nothing for podcasting.

We PP users should be thanking him & sending in a cash donation to make it easier for him to spend the time required (after his real job in the daytime) for making updates just to keep his already-perfectly-working plugin compatible with the changes WordPress 2.6 forced. Of course Seek3r himself rarely mentions the donations, he just does this completely for free and it’s optional for people to lend support if they appreciate the efforts.

I have donated twice this year, and I hope others will join me in a more positive effort to support this plugin. Either by donating, or offer to help with the code, or if you’re really that stout then make your own podcast plugin and give it away like he has done.

Ok – I see a month has passed and there is no new podpress. should I move to “podcasting” for podcast support ?!

well…im just not sure podpress is getting updated. I’m sure its a lot of work, so I understand.

Ive been using blubrry.com forever fo stats and as another outlet for my podcast…they recently released powerpress for wordpress podcasting. Works great for me…and it imports podpress stuff. The plugin is in the wordpress extend area now….

    Hello,
I have the most current version of WP and PodPress installed but for some reason I can’t see the basic Mp3 player (i believe it’s also called the ‘listen wrapper’) despite it being enabled in the setting. However, I’m able to see the download, play now and play in pop up links, podcast duration, etc..but for some reason the actual image icon/player graphic doesn’t come out.

Can anyone help me figure this out???

    Many thanks in advance,
    R
