• I am running an old version of WP on my blog and lately I notice my bandwidth is being eaten up and all the search engine keywords are for insurance or meds or some such. Then today all my links both in my dashboard and my actual blog take me to myinfo.com or something similar. Looks like I’ve been hacked/spammed whatever but what I am stuck with now is what to do next?
Can anyone help, I am pretty rubbish at knowing what to do next

  • 1. Notify your web host that your site has been breached. And remain calm. If you are in a shared hosting environment (most folks are), the hacker could have gotten in ANYWHERE. Remember, in a shared hosting environment, you are only as safe as the least secure site on the server. (That makes you feel better, huh?)

    2. Change all of your passwords in connection with that hosting.

    3. Hopefully either you or your web host has a backup of your MySQL file that housed your WordPress site. If the site contents is important to you, you may be able to recover some of it using sites such as Google (their cache), Bloglines feeds, your own RSS feed, etc.

    4. Otherwise, just wipe the slate clean and install WP 2.5.1.
