I added the Category Excluder plugin to our blog on 8/15/16 and it was working just fine – on desktops/laptops and on mobile phones and tablets. Using Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.

On 8/21/16, the Category Excluder suddenly stopped working on all mobile devices, and on Mac computers. It was only working on PC computers. No change was made to the structure of our blog – no new updates, no new plugins, no plugin updates. The posts in the excluded categories just would not show up on any mobile device (using any browser), or on a Mac computer (using any browser).

Therefore, I uninstalled the Category Excluder plugin, then reinstalled it, and set it up again. At that time, all posts in the excluded categories then showed up on mobile and on Mac computers.

However, that was a one-time fix. Now, whenever a new post in an excluded category is added to the blog, it will not show up on any mobile device, nor will it show up on a Mac computer, in any browser.

Any ideas WHY this is happening, and how to fix it?

At this time, the Category Excluder plugin is ONLY working on PC desktops and laptops.

    Our blog is https://www.vintageunscripted.com
The excluded category is called “Our Unscripted Lives” . This category has 7 subcategories beneath the main category. The main category of “Our Unscripted Lives” and all subcategories are hidden in the Category Excluder screen in the Main Page and Feeds columns.

    UCE version: 1.0
    PHP version: 5.6.24
    MySQL version: 5.5.42-37.1-log
    WordPress version: 4.5.3
    Theme: Olsen is version 1.3
    Number of categories is: 25

That’s an unusual situation. The plugin doesn’t do anything to identify or behave differently for desktop vs. mobile devices. It also doesn’t “care” what browser is being used. So I’m not sure what the problem might be.

Do you use a mobile detection plugin that changes themes for mobile devices?

    Hi Marios –

Our theme (Olsen) is mobile-friendly (as built in to the theme), but we do not have any plugins for mobile detection of any kind.

I can keep uninstalling and reinstalling the Category Excluder, and when I do that, the posts show up on mobile and Mac, but I really am hoping I don’t have to uninstall/reinstall each time there is a post.

I just don’t understand why the Category Excluder was working on all devices, and then suddenly stopped working on mobile and Mac.

I know that on my iPhone and iPad, I have not updated the IOS at all this month, so I don’t think that is the issue.

Do you think this could be some kind of a cache issue?

Caching can be a problem. Some caching plugins have different settings for desktop vs. mobile. Are you using a caching plugin? If so, which one?

The only cache plugin we are using is W3 Total Cache.

Do you have any thing enabled on this cache admin page?

    /wp-admin/admin.php?page=w3tc_mobile

Sorry, I don’t know how to find the cache admin page of /wp-admin/admin.php?page=w3tc_mobile – would that be on BlueHost (our web hosting provider) or somewhere accessible from the WordPress dashboard?

I am certain that when I added the W3 Total Cache plugin (several months ago), I just activated it and didn’t modify any of the settings.

Before I received your message above, I deactivated the W3 Total Cache plugin, then posted two test posts to the excluded category, and both those posts showed up immediately on my iPhone. So it definitely seems that the W3 Total Cache plugin is the culprit.

The URL I provided is a WordPress admin URL. If your setup is standard, you should just be able to paste it at the end of the domain and the page will load.

Otherwise go to the W3 Total Cache plugin menu and click on the User Agent sub-menu.

Found the menu – thank you.

On the User Agent Groups there is nothing enabled. Should there be?

I’d expect nothing to be enabled so your set up looks right. Based on what you said it there’s some incompatibility with the W3 Total Cache plugin. Are you willing to do some tests? If so, can you turn off options one-by-one to see what might be causing the problem?

Under General Settings try disabling one feature at a time and see if doing so “fixes” the UCE plugin.

Of course, even if you find the incompatibility I likely won’t be able to provide a fix the caching plugin. So at best you would need to decide whether the incompatible feature is something you’d be willing to keep turned off.

I sincerely appreciate your time and help Marios!

I will follow your suggestion and see what happens. Hopefully I can determine which plugin/setting is causing the sudden-onset issue with the Category Excluder.
