Image size limit?

This one is a mystery…I have some images 172×228 and I want to get them down to 113×150. I normally do this via CSS.
They import into Media fine.
When I link them on Staff Directory edit page they look fine.
But in the Staff list in the Dashboard, it appears square. On the staff listing page, they become square.
Even when the CSS is not explicitly defining an image or div size it doesn’t come through at 172×228.
I am working around by scaling the images before upload into Media.
Is there some kind of image size limit built in?
