Custom 3 column layout for 3 category blog?

Hi,

To keep my question simple:

I want to create a wordpress-site, with three blog-categories, that looks like this:

However, I can’t find any template that matches my needs and therefore I will need help from your expertise.

Q1. Is this even possible? To clarify, all I want is to be able to write posts for my blog and choose category, so that it shows up in the correct space of the frontpage. At most I want two posts in each category shown on the frontpage. Also, in the menu I want to have the categories, so that when I click on category 1 I can see all posts in that category.

Q2. What would be the simplest way to build this? Modify a template with CSS? Build a simple one from scratch? I have absolutely no interest in a beautiful site, I just want a black and white one that works. The simpler – the better.
