What exactly is an enclosure?

I see that wp-cron executes pingbacks, enclosures, trackbacks, and generic pings. And that each post adds an ‘enclose_me’ to the postmeta table, in addition to a ‘ping_me’.
But what exactly is an enclosure? What does it do/what happens when it’s done?
