  • Hi Kirsten,

It looks like this is a new policy from Google that is only effecting new domains. I’m investigating and will put out an update as soon as possible.

Thanks, Nate. What a pity I didn’t do this a week ago! What a headache for you though.

By the way, the option to put opening times on one line is not working for me.

    Hi Kristen,

Can you tell me more details about the issue you’re having with opening times? Is the problem with the widget or the shortcode? If the widget, which boxes are checked? If the shortcode, can you copy the full shortcode you’re using?

And finally, what do your opening hours look like at the moment? Can you show me the settings?

(Currently working on a fix for the maps things. Unfortunately there will be a few hoops to hop through for Google. But I’m just doing some final testing and updating the docs to make sure it works as smoothly as possible.)

Aha, you need both checkboxes ticked. Working now.

I hope you’re able to find a fix for the map. I will hold off installing a different map plugin then.

    Hi Kirsten,

I’ve just put out an update to Business Profile (v1.1.1) which provides space for a Google Maps API Key, which is unfortunately required for all new websites.

Anyone who has used Google Maps on their domain name prior to June 22, 2016 shouldn’t need an API key.

Once you’ve updated, you’ll find the new Google Maps API Key text field directly under the Address area in your Business Profile. There’s a link there you can follow to get an API key, and I’ve updated the documentation with a step-by-step guide to getting your API key.

Unfortunately, Google has made the process not very user-friendly for non-technical users. But with the walkthrough you should be able to make your way through it.

Updates can sometimes take several hours to appear in your WordPress admin dashboard. So if you don’t see it yet, just keep checking back.

Thank you! It’s working perfectly now. That was a very quick turnaround. Much appreciated.

One more question: Is there anyway to suppress ‘Map/Satellite’ options that are obscuring the company name? I am OK with doing that myself, and will look into it. Am currently reading https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/tutorials/styling-the-base-map#hiding_features but I was just wondering if it was something that had come up before.

    Hi Kirsten,

The section you’re looking for is for hiding features on the map itself (parks, roads, etc). You’re looking for a way to hide the “Controls” of the map. This page includes some useful information:

    https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/controls#DisablingDefaults

My recommendation would be to maybe try and give your map a little bit more space. If it’s that small, you’ll probably want to display it a little bit bigger so that users can get a sense of the surrounding area (the info window where the name/address appears is probably covering a lot of the map if the name is hidden behind the map type control).

However, if you’re a developer, you can pass options to the Map api using the bpfwp_google_map_options filter.

    Perfect. Thanks for the pointer.

I am developing a theme that that site will use. Just doing some testing of different plugins at the moment. Where it will go does have some more space, but I think I would still like those gone and will use the filter.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out the developer documentation:

This worked like a charm, by the way. Thanks.
