WordPress Import/Export duplicated items in database

Having a slight issue which may be server side. When using the default wordpress import it appears to be duplicating meta data(keys,id’s, etc) in my database. Is this an issue with wordpress’ core functions or is this something that should be handle by my admin. I only have this issue when doing a direct database querystr. to pull posts that are the most popular and most shared. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
