    Good day to all.

    Yes, after doing multiple installations, upgrades, and fixes I have always made a habit of backing up my sites. Today, I was doing a quick post and was running into a bit of trouble. Seeing the upgrade button, I thought that would be my answer. I figured it would go just like all other upgrades, so why bother today? Well, at least I copied my theme…

    Bottom line – I uploaded the new version, wrote over the content directory. And everything else. I didn’t touch the database. Is there anything I can do to salvage the site?

  • Okay, I don’t understand what the problem is. You copied your theme, right?

    Upload the copy of your theme into your themes directory.

    If that is not the problem, and you don’t have a copy of your theme, maybe you could ask your host if they have a backup of your site.

    Thanks for your reply…

    – I uploaded the new version of WordPress…
    – In my haste, I wrote over the wp-content folder…
    – When I tried to update the database, the site was blank…as if the files did not exist…but I see them clearly in the FTP folder. I cannot login, or pull up anything… I believe the database is still intact, but just the root files have been deleted.

    Well, that’s not right. Something else is up.

    If you overwrote the wp-content folder, you would be left with the default and classic themes. Of course, you have had some plugins that — if suddenly removed — might cause your site to break, but you still should be able to login to the dashboard.

    Can you provide a link?

    Also: did you overwrite your wp-config.php file, too?

    The wp-config.php file is in tact! I did not overwrite that file.

    Okay, just overwriting your wp-content file should not delete your entire site. If the database is still there and your wp-config.php file is still there, the whole thing should work.

    Here’s what I would do:

    1. Make sure the database is still there.

    2. Delete all the old WP files (but not the files mentioned in the upgrade instructions.

    3. Upload a fresh set of 2.5.1 files, and make sure everything gets uploaded.

    4. Make sure you upload the new Default and Classic themes, too.

    5. Try that wp-admin/upgrade.php again.

    P.S., I almost forgot: that is a beautiful theme. Is it Revolution?

    Thanks for your help! That forced me to look at the FTP site and compare folders once more – that’s when I noticed I did not upload the “includes” folder… Might need that…=)

    Once completed, everything worked fine.

    this may be of use as well =) I realize WP has its own backup but this one is configurable to be able to backup any mysql database, and it doesnt take much work to convert it to work in MSSQL or Oracle if you wish it to.
