• Blog Stats says that I’ve had 250 total visits to my blog. But my hosting company says that I’ve had 900 unique visits in each of the two months my blog has been live (so 1800 total). Can anyone explain how to interpret these numbers?

    Thank you,
    Christina

  • With a grain of salt.

The thing about unique visitors is that it’s almost impossible to get a solid number, and various tracking sources will have different methods of determining this.

For example, many tracking implementations go by IP address to determine how many unique visitors a site has, but a person’s IP address can change every time they get online (for dial up users) or every once in a while even for broadband users.

I personally trust Google Analytics the most, but it’s nearly impossible to know which, if any, tracking software is the most accurate.

I do feel that the Web Stats software that comes with many cPanel-based hosts is quite exaggerated, though.
