Customizing Themes

Hey, i’m new to wordpress and am in the process of trying to customize my theme. i cannot change the red background to a black one…even though i changed the color to black in the style sheet. i don’t know why i have to change the color b/c the demo is showing a black background.

Also, i cannot change the color of the fonts, whether links or regular text no matter how much i change the style sheets.

i know this is really simple, and i’m such a dork for not being able to figure it out…please help…thanx;0)
