How to Create Private Blog in WordPress 2.5?

  • It was possible in prior versions of WordPress to use a plug-in called Angsuman’s Authenticated WordPress Plugin to restrict access to ALL content on a blog to registered subscribers. This was ideal for blogs with a small group of people wishing to conduct private on-line discussions without those discussions becoming public. But this plug-in appears no longer to work in WordPress 2.5, and I’ve been unable to find any other tool for making the entire content of a website accessible ONLY to registered users. The Privacy settings in WordPress itself don’t seem to anticipate this situation. Does anyone have suggestions about how to create and manage a private blog in WordPress 2.5?

    Yes, I’m afraid you’re experiencing the same problem I did. It initially seems to work, but the privacy settings in fact fail and RSS feeds no longer work. I found that I just couldn’t get the functionality I needed in 2.5, whereas it worked just fine with earlier versions.

    I appreciate your checking on this. I wish the original author would update the plug-in, since it wasn’t immensely helpful to me. I tried contacting the author, but never got a reply.

    Note, however, that this hack does nothing about RSS feeds; they are still readable by the public…

    Have you tried the Members Only plugin? I’m using it, and it works fine with v2.5.1.

    A plugin that allows you to make your WordPress blog only viewable to users that are logged in. If a visitor is not logged in, they will be redirected either to the WordPress login page or a page of your choice. Once logged in they can be redirected back to the page that they originally requested. You can also protect your Feeds whilst allowing registered user access to them by using Feed Keys.
