I have a gallery using “Basic Thumbnails.” I click the “Show Slideshow Link” option under Customize Display Settings under Display Galleries. I leave the Slideshow Link Text as default “[Show slideshow].”

Here is the page with the gallery:

    christianboyce.com/murchison3rdgrade

The link shows up on my page, and it has the expected URL–

    christianboyce.com/murchison3rdgrade/nggallery/slideshow

But… when I click that link, instead of seeing a slideshow (which I believe will be an automatically-changing slideshow) I am taken to my site’s homepage. How can I make this work?

    Thank you–

  • Gallery works fine for me, except for not seeing the “Start Slideshow” link. If you are still taken to your homepage when clicking a random image please clear your browser cache/delete temporary internet files.

Yes, the gallery works fine, and the “Start Slideshow” link I had to turn off because it keeps taking me to my home page and it makes me look silly. I’m sure it’s not a caching problem.

Clicking on a thumbnail shows me the larger version. But if I show the slideshow link, and then click on it, it takes me to my home page.

I’ve made new galleries to test with new pages and they have the same problem.

Since the link shows a certain path (christianboyce.com/murchison3rdgrade/nggallery/slideshow) I would expect to see a directory created at the top level of my site called “murchison3rdgrade” but this is not the case. Nor is it the case with any of the other galleries I’ve made. I wonder if there is a permissions issue, keeping NextGEN’s plug-in from making those directories.

    Thanks for checking.

When using default settings the directories holding the images of the galleries are usually created inside /wp-content/gallery. There are no directories created in the root folder of your site.

It’s a bit hard to actually troubleshoot without being able to see the “Start Slideshow” button in action. Could you maybe turn it on so i can see the Slideshow link and look at the actual code/URL?

OK, here’s one of my pages with the same problem:

    https://christianboyce.com/onemoretime

When you click the link for Show Slideshow it takes you to my home page, same as it does when I turn the link on in my other pages. You’ll notice that clicking a thumbnail works, but clicking the “Show Slideshow” link does not.

Thanks a lot for your help.

My galleries are all inside wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/

Just checked, can’t see anything shady codewise. Erm..did you do the usual troubleshooting already, like disabling all plugins except for NextGen and then check if the slideshow link works as intended?

If it does then it’s enabling the plugins again, one at a time. (Well, if you have a lot of plugins then you could also enable them in batches, like 3 at a time -> check if the link is still working -> if yes, enable next 3 plugins aso.)

I disabled every plug-in except NextGEN Gallery and still the same problem. I think that the initial installation did not work completely– perhaps did not create all the folders it should. I was able to install NextGEN Gallery on another site, hosted on the same server, and it works perfectly, including the “Show Slideshow” link. But, I notice that the paths are not the same for the galleries. The one that works is in

    wp-content/gallery/

the one that doesn’t work is in

    wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/

I don’t know how that came to be– I certainly didn’t do it on purpose. I have tried to reverse engineer the thing, looking at the site that works, but I can’t tell what to do.

I would reinstall the plug-in but I have an ongoing art-show contest with voting going on and I don’t want to interrupt it. Maybe when the contest is over.

The second path looks odd indeed.
With a default installation the first path you mentioned is the default for a clean installation, you can check that by going into “Gallery -> Other Options – Image Options”.

However, if “wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/” is specified there then the gallery should work fine, and so should should the Slideshow link,. You might wanna check if the path on your non-working installation.

@christianboyce – The gallery path (wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/) you are referencing is generally only seen when NextGEN Gallery is installed and network activated on a Multisite installation … but recent “managed GoDaddy” WordPress installations are showing this for single site installs and subsequently there have been varying issues we have not been able to sort out.

As it is, the path wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/ … or any other path set correctly under Gallery > Other Options > Image Options should work without issue.

Something else to consider, if you recently migrated to GoDaddy then you may need to use the Reset Option under Gallery > Other Options to “correct” the issue with the gallery paths.

Is there a way for me to “Reset” things “in place” without disturbing my existing galleries? I am also using NextGEN Gallery Voting and I don’t want to mess that up.

I’m not using GoDaddy. I’m hosted at Pair.com.

I have not been able to make the “Show Slideshow” link work on any of the galleries I have installed in wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/ . I wonder whether some folder or file did not get installed during the plug-in’s initial installation. If you can provide a list of files that should be installed by the NextGEN Gallery plug-in I can check by hand to see if they are there.

    Thank you–

@christianboyce – The Reset Option will put our NextGEN Gallery plugin’s settings back to what should be its installation defaults on the site. It will not affect existing inserted galleries if you used the IGW (“green button”) in the TinyMCE editor’s visual tab.

I’m not familiar with “Pair.com” but if this is a single site installation then the default gallery path you are noting is not expected, it should be /wp-content/gallery/ but ultimately it should not make a difference if you set it yourself. The concern with the path is if it is being set during installation as that is the expected path for the primary sub-site in a Multisite installation. We have only currently seen this in GoDaddy Managed WordPress installations and only very recently.

If you are concerned with the completeness of the NextGEN Gallery installation, you can either re-install the plugin via the WordPress Plugins interface (first deactivate and delete the plugin, this will not affect your gallery images); or, you can download another copy from WordPress and compare the files/folders to the new download.

    Thanks!
