wp-offline

  • Hello there, I having real issues with finding a effective way to save our wordpress sites in offline format that I can then just put on a CD or Memory stick. Although I have set up xaamp on my laptop and got one install working, doing it 50+ times will be a massive task that will get outdated quickly anyway.

    I have been reading about Google Gears and have got really excited about it as it is going to be a really useful way of being able to keep up to date offline versions of all our sites.

    I got even more excited when I found out about the wp-offline plugin but I have been having a very difficult time getting it installed.

    I would be really grateful if anyone has got a few minutes to give me some assistance on this?

    I have set up a test site at https://www.abdtest.co.uk. It looks pretty horrible but it is just for testing out things. I have Google Gears installed on my browser and I am fairly confident I followed the instructions for getting the plugin installed but I cannot seem to get it to work.

    I put <div id="wp-off"></div> in my header.php file but it is not displaying the Google Display. Apologies for any basic errors and I am very grateful for any suggestions.

  • Placing WordPress on a USB stick is not a bad idea. Have you looked at this?

    I’m not familiar with either Google Gears or wp-offline plugin but you have sparked my curiousity. I have some homework to do. ??

    Hi there, thanks for your reply, I have seen the article and tried to do it but it kept crashing. ?? Anyway, it’s purely for being able to demonstrate my websites offline that I have been looking at different options. A friend of mine with very little computer experience (but a really good sales manner) is going to be acting as an agent for me in another Town. She has a laptop but doesn’t posses the skills to set up XAAMP. Also, she only wants to demonstrate my websites (50+ of them), not do anything else.

    Right now I have resorted to just taking screenshots of my sites which hardly shows them working but at least allows people to see what they look like.

    These are all I could find on it. I am surprised that there isn’t more info about it as I think it is revolutionary but there isn’t that I can see.

    You can install WordPress locally with Wamp. Here are the instructions.

    You can have also a similar result by writing your posts with Live Writer. The articles are managed and saved locally and uploaded by the editor.

    Hi there, thanks very much for the link. However, I don’t want to do anything other than get this wp-offline working on my sites with Google Gears because I want to just demonstrate my websites to potential clients and have an easy way of keeping these offline versions up to date (about 50 of them).

    Well, made a bit more progress, I managed to get the “this site has Google Gears on it” box appear by putting the full path in wp-offline.js and omitting the trailing slaslh which had somehow got in there.. just need to get the online / offline options appearing now………

    OK, taking out the css file from the plugin folder made the link appear, which is great! Unfotunately, it stopped at 75% progress for ages and then claimed an image was missing from a particular folder in another plugin.

    I removed the plugin in question, reinstalled the wp-offline plugin and regenerated the JSON manifestt. tried again. Again, it stopped at 75% but then it finally appeared to complete, after a long delay…

    I don’t if anyone else has managed to get round these problems but I thought I would keep posting my experiences until I get it cracked… ??

    I have been wrestling with this plugin for some time now. It does work but there are a few funnies such as the 75% one.
    According to the author:
    “There’s no way to tell the status of the managed resource store, so you can’t make an accurate progress bar (unless you use a normal resource store and manage it yourself).”
    Consequently he put this in the java script:
    if(progressBar.step >= 0.75) {
    window.clearInterval(timerId);
    }
    If you remove that from wp-offline.js, guess what, it goes through to 100% and sits there until it actually finishes.

    What bugs me more is that everytime you click on the offline icon it has to download everything rather than work out if anything has changed and act accordingly. Any ideas on that?
