Alternative to Disclose-Secret plugin?

I am also looking for something exactly like this. I use both plugins to control the viewing of restricted pages, but I would like to find a plugin that is updated more frequently (the old plugin doesn’t even really work for WP 2.3.x). Is there any help?

(Given the apparent blank stares from people on these forums, I guess not…)

Private plus might just be the solution.

This plugin does not work either (guessed it?), but the author wrote something about fixing it after 5th may, and this plugin is rather simple as compared to Disclose secret. There is hope thus.

The amount of menus/submenus and settings is a bit intimidating at first sight, though. This plugin would benefit from step-by-step instructions for a set of common tasks – and a few more advanced examples.

There is one strange UI feature or bug:

Only when I click “Users”, will the Groups and Roles menus become visible. Is it a planned feature that these two menus are inserted into the top level admin menu once the admin clicks on “Users”, or should these two menus be placed as ordinary submenus? I would vote for placement as submenus. That would be more intuitive.

Adding “Read private pages” capability to some group does NOT affect the wp_list_pages output ??

Even if a subscriber is now capable of viewing private pages, those pages are not show in the wp_list_pages output after logging in. One needs to access them by direct url. Strange.

Same problem with privacuPlus, though. Maybe this is a wp 2.5.x bug?

Agreed, but I probably won’t get that done right away. I’m already late getting a big garden planted while I wait for all the WordPress CMS clients to come beating down my door. Maybe your could channel some of that enthusiasm into an unofficial guide to Role Scoper?

No, it’s not a WP bug, but it’s not easy either. I went to great pains to make Role Scoper work just the way you were hoping. Needless to say I was unpleasantly surprised to hear it didn’t show your private pages.

The new beta revision restores the expected behavior (private pages are listed if the logged user has a sufficient role via user or group assignment).

It would be helpful for me to know at what point the Role Scoper interface became overly complicated for you. Basic administration of content viewing roles shouldn’t require any more than checking desired users in the WordPress “Edit Post” or “Edit Page” interface. Check the underlying “exclusive” box if you want WP blog roles ignored.

The advanced options that pertain to functionality you don’t need can usually be ignored.

Even though I don’t currently have time to write an exhaustive operation manual, if you say what you’re trying to do I should be able to reply with some step-by-step instructions.

I need to open each menu, study them and memorize them. The menu names are not so helpfull. Especially as “Realms” and “Scopes” and such terms are not familiar to me. (no, I’m not a native neglish speaker).

I’ll give some thought to how the navigation and interface could be improved. Being intuitive is important to me.

I felt the Users tab could become too cluttered if I put all my links on it. Especially if someone also has Role Manager running.

I tend to opt for an unfamiliar word or even coin a new one when none of the common terms are precise or concise enough. I think those terms do accurately suggest what (and where) the plugin is doing. I’ll take note of your grievance but I’m not ready to rephrase yet ??

I’m interested in the Role scooper plugin but it’s just so confusing!
The only thing I want is to let certain users read posts that other users can’t read, but it’s too difficult for me to figure that plugin out:(

Well this topic is resolved! Role Scoper is definitely an alternative to Disclose-Secret, at least for my purposes.

It does take things to a whole new level which unfortunately makes it rather complicated compared to Disclose-Secret, but once I’ve worked out how to use it for my simplified purposes I will be happy to help others out. I remember Disclose-Secret had the functionality of displaying my “Private” category in the category list when a user that could access my “private” category posts were logged in, and couldn’t see that category when not logged in. I’m not sure if Role Scoper can selectively display categories although it’s early days and I have a lot to learn about this new plugin.

In summary, it’s definitely worth exploring if you can’t wait for the author of Disclose-Secret to update his plugin, but if you get confused easily then you will have to either wait for Disclose-Secret to be updated, or wait for some easy to understand instructions for this plugin.

I was using Disclose Secrets for a long time and have been waiting for a long time too for an update of the plugin and therefore had to postpone the update of WP itself. When I heard of Role Scoper, I changed and was finally able to update from WP 2.1.x to 2.6.

It works great for me, I had not problems and I tested it a lot. I hope that it will be maintained for a long time. ??

My only wish is as the other users have mentioned too: It’s not so easy to understand and quite complicated with all the menues, options and stuff. (I’m not a native speaker myself.) It would be great if it could be a bit simpler – at least more intuitive.
I just need to make certain posts and pages just visible to certain users, therefore I just want to create groups, put some members into them and decide with each new post or page which group should have reading access.

– And I cannot repeat too often that something like this should be part of the WP core in my opinion. ??
