input text not visible

The input text isn’t visible upon entering—it only becomes a color when you click outside of the form, which doesn’t seem likely for a user to do.
Is there any way for the text to be the input color AS the person types? My client has asked for people to be able to see the text they’re inputting, which seems completely reasonable to me.
