Site is eating bandwidth. What can I do?

  • I have build a site https://ollekebolleke.info. Traffic is about 200-400 visitors daily. Bandwidth is going trough the roof. It’s almost 50 GB monthly.

    My ISP told me that I have too many plugins (15), but they didn’t tell me which plugin might be the cause of this excessive bandwidth usage.

    How can I find out what is causing the bandwidth problem?

  • Hi,
    You don’t seem to be using a cache plugin, (e.g. super cache or w3 total cache) That is the first step in reducing bandwidth usage. And of course shaving off all unnecessary plugins is important too.

    The problem is that all those plugins are necessary. I’ve already deleted the unnecessary ones. Bandwidth is now over 40 Gb, and that’s insane.

    I just tried to install W3 total cache. Blank screen with the error:
    Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘by’ (T_STRING) in /home/ollekebolleke/public_html/wp-config.php on line 26

    Site is down, can’t uninstall the cache plugin. I tried super cache before, had similar problems. That’s why I didn’t install it.

    That was scary. I couldn’t get in the site anymore. The problem was that w3 didn’t comment something that should be commented.
    Adding // beforeAdded by WP-Cache Manager solved it.

    Now see if this helps reducing the bandwidth.

    Strange. I thought I solved it, but this is Supercache. I had uninstalled that one. My site is running again (thank the gods!) W3 works now.

    Supercache left a few lines of code behind, that was causing the site crash.

    Now see if W3 solves my bandwidth problem.
