I’ve just installed the current version of Cerber. It does a great job of protecting my site, but I have a question. I’ve noticed that I get a “login failed” message with blank “Local User” and “Username used” fields in the log immediately before a successful login, and immediately after logging out. I can tell that the “Login failed” events are associated with logging in and out, because the IP addresses and time stamps match.

With regards to the “Login failed” message when logging out, this is nothing more than a minor curiosity. However, the “Login failed” error prior to logging in creates a vicious circle, where the system never has the opportunity to validate the credentials of a legitimate user accessing the system from a new IP address, since the login attempt using blank credentials causes the IP to be blocked.

Is there a setting that needs to be changed to prevent this from happening? I am presently using the default settings for Cerber.

Thank you for for your excellent plugin. I look forward to your reply.

I just discovered that the problem described above only occurs with my user account, which has the Administrator role. Another user account with the Author role does not demonstrate this problem.

    Hi!

    Please follow these steps:

    1. Create new user with Administrator role and do not change password automatically supplied by the WP.
    2. Try to log in and log out with this user.
    3. Check out how is it going on Activity tab.
    4. Let me know how is it goes.

I followed your suggested steps, and was able to reproduce the error. I then changed the new account to the Author role, and was still able to reproduce the error. Contrary to my earlier statement, I don’t think the problem has anything to do with role.

I think there is some conflict with another plugin. Could you provide me with a list of installed and active plugins? You can submit it via support form: https://wpcerber.com/support/

I would be glad to do this if we are unable to resolve the issue by other means. What I have discovered in the meantime is that the problem only reproduces when logging into the back end via wp-login.php. I have a third-party widget for logging into the front end which works fine for both Author and Administrator accounts.

    Does this information help?

Do you see all of the logins made by using that widget on the Activity tab?

Yes. All of the plugin logins show in the activity tab, without any of the blank username login errors.

Is it possible to temporarily disable the widget plugin and try to log in and log out by using wp-login.php?

It does look as though there may be an association between the login widget and the blank login error. I encountered no errors with this particular plugin disabled. Here is the plugin:

Sadly, but it seems that author of that plugin abandoned it. No activity on the author profile page, no updating plugin. I can’t comment on that. Perhaps, author of the plugin never tried to monitor activity which are generated by his plugin code during authorization process.

I’ve replaced the front end login plugin with a different one that appears to be much better behaved. So far, I have not seen the error with blank user attempted logins.

Thanks much for your help resolving this problem!
