Denying Access under construction

I am trying to work on my WordPress blog without it being accessible by an average visitor.

I changed the index page to a different file name so that I could work there while the regular index page remains, but the whole site bombs because of this.

How can I keep what I have up there and still edit the blog until its ready for public view?

If I put it back to index.php everything is working properly.
