Unable to connect to an external database

    Hello,

    Please, do you know if wordpress is capable of connecting itself to an external database, not managed by the blog’s current host, but located on the servers of another company ?

    I don’t manage to make my WP blog connect to an external database, most regrettably, because I was graciously offered to use the mysql server of a dedicated box, while the sql servers of my current host are horrible.
    My blog’s domain was added to the dedi’s allowed remote hosts, the dump of my blog’s database was copied to the dedi box with exactly the same database and user names, my wp-config was edited accordingly, I made sure mysql outbound port worked on my blog’s host… and yet, no connexion can be made…
    I also installed a wordpress blog on that dedi box and it successfully connected to that database.
    Before you ask, I am graciously allowed to use the database, but not to move my blog to there ??

    I’m now wondering if wordpress allows at all external database connexion…

    Please, would you know that ?

    WordPress accepts whatever parameters you give it. If you tell it to connect to something, it’ll try.

    But your hosting may not allow outgoing connections to servers outside their systems on that port. Security and what-not.

    Thanks for the confirmation Otto. My host allows mysql outbound port, so, with your confirmation, I digged further and bugged the support team until a higher up replied me. It was a story of mutualized hosting that wouldn’t allow pointing to the domain where I am but to another ip of the company instead, honestly I didn’t get it, but with the new IP added to the allowed sql remote hosts, that worked.

    Thank you, without your official confirmation the support technicians wouldn’t have bothered to find the info I needed ??
