reCAPTCHA preventing forms being submitted

Having problems with reCAPTCHA on a contact form. No problems verifying as “not a robot”, but clicking “submit” gets flagged as auto-spam. After a lot of trial-and-error, I’ve found it’s only when the reCAPTCHA is in the form that it gets flagged as spam.
How can I use reCAPTCHA without everything being flagged as spam?
