Ok so I have not activated anything as yet.. but I was reading the steps and in step 1 it says that if I want wp in its own directory to do it before activating MU.. ok so that is done..
Bu I get to the part where it tells me to chose between subdomain or directory.. I want subdomain. site1.mysite.com

and i read that I cannot have wp in its own directory it needs to be in a the root? sooo why is that not stated on step 1.. am I missing step/ the point about this.. please explain.

  • There is an installation directory and running directory.

The installation directory is where you install WP. For example you can install WP in /public_html/wordpress_installation_directory; but your WP site URL is https://domain.com/ (dont see the installation directory)

The “running” directory is actually shown in the url. Typically the running directory is also the installation directory too. For example you can install WP in /public_html/wordpress; your WP site url is https://domain.com/wordpress

Note that a majority of WP users will use WP single site. Now if you want to run WP multisite there are some restrictions. One of those restrictions is you cannot configure WP subdomain when you have a “running” directory configured.

Thanks.. I understand the difference between having the core files in its own directory and the site url being different.
What I don’t understand is why give instructions to make sure that if you want to have the wp core files in its own directory to do so before activating the MU feature just to say by the way the subdomain option does not work under those conditions, later in different step. Why have that in step “0” as it is in the codex when one of the options won’t allow for that all. Just doesn’t make sense..
