get_the_post_thumbnail() is not working

Hi guys I am new to wordpress.
Please see the code below, by default it is there in the index.php but it is not showing the image in post summary.
Why?

echo '<div class="grid_post_img">
<a href="'.get_permalink().'">'.get_the_post_thumbnail().'</a>
</div>';
