Redirect to custom login page rather than wp-login.php?

Can the members plugin be used with a custom login page instead of the standard wordpress wp-login.php?

I created a custom login page using a permanent functions.php redirect from the standard login to the new and now the members plugin causes a loop.

What is the right way to do this?
