• Hello…I have been researching this for quite some time, but keep coming across conflicting steps in the process…And hoping someone can advise on the best way to do this..

I need to change my current domain name, to a new domain:

    1) Do I create a new directory for the new domain and copy files over from the old domain?

    – OR –

    2) Do I just point the new domain to the existing directory folder?

Both domains are within the same hosting package.

Some have said only point the new domain to the folder…but others say i should create a new folder and copy over the files…im confused. ??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • You can use both method… In any cases you need to change site url and home url value in option table.

Thanks for the reply…would you say its better to copy the files over?

I was under the impression that i would also need to edit the HTACCESS file of the old domain folder to do a 301 redirect…but, if im only pointing the new domain to the existing folder, then would I still be able to edit the HTACCESS file to properly redirect?…or does it require the old folder to edit the HTACCESS?

Yes it will be good to copy the files to subdirectpry and create htaccess redirect rules. If you point to existing directory then still you need to make 301 redirection rules from old url to new url.
