Odd Page Load/Hang

  • I had a site built by someone who shall remain nameless for the moment. They have been unwilling (or unable) to correct an issue with my site.

    *note all the times I refer to are for fresh loads(ie non cached – to replicate a new user coming to the site experience).

    When they first finished my site the hang/load time was horrendous (about 13-15 seconds on Chrome and approx 12 with IE and FF).

    The time has been improved to around 6-8 second load which is still unacceptable and especially since this individual made me pay them more to move my site host to a different one promising that would solve the problem and it didn’t (it did improve slightly but only about 1 second less to load – I was with Godaddy and the person highly recommended I switch to Digital Ocean to get the site running properly).

    So now the details. When the page is loading it has an odd hang time for about 3 seconds where it just sits there on a particular item. It’s odd because this hang time isn’t for one specific item, it varies for each load. It actually changes all the time. Sometimes it will be “waiting on bendedreality” other times it’s a different plugin each time – ie sometimes it’s Adsense, sometimes it’s my other ad service sometimes it’s a different plugin, sometimes it’s resolving host etc.. The point is it’s not a specific plugin or item, the hang time item is always different.

    I’ve even ran the site without all the add-ons and it still finds something to “HANG” on. Almost as if it’s programmed into the script or something.

    I don’t know what else to do as the person who built the site is acting like they have tried everything, but keeps telling me they will “keep digging” which so far just equals lip service and doing JACK@#$%!

    I guess I was just wondering if anyone that is knowledgeable can offer their input as to what it could be and possibly how to remedy it.

    The site is BENDEDREALITY.COM and it’s a child theme of the Clarity Theme running on Digital Ocean server.

    Well, it appears there are dozens and dozens of page redirects on your site. You can run your site against gtmetrix.com; which will provide you with very helpful analytics.

    Click “Minimize redirects”; and you will see all the redirects the site is performing.

    Also, click “Leverage browser caching”. You see all those images? You need to leverage browser caching.

    You can Google for each of the analytic sections; to see how you can improve them on your WordPress site.

    Or, (I’ve never used it; and I have no affiliation), but this plugin caught my attention:

    I believe it allows you to incorporate the browser caching without having to directly modify your .htaccess file.

    Okay may not be good at explaining this so I’m sorry if I don’t get what you’re saying but was referring to the “entire website” as obviously the site will have redirects as it deals with many articles and links are within them, I was referring to the main/home page.

    Again I don’t know if that makes any difference in the home page load or not bit I had assumed the other sub pages (ie individual articles) don’t come into play on home page loads.
