Event widget cuts off display at start of event; need it to display until end

It seems that once an event start time has been reached, that event no longer shows up in the “Upcoming” sidebar widget. How do I change it so events continue to display until their end time?
This is important to us because we are promoting music gigs, and people may be looking at our website at the last minute to decide whether or not to come out to a show. If a concert begins at 8 and runs till midnight, at 8:01 pm it’s no longer in the sidebar. If someone looks at the home page and the first thing shown in the list of upcoming events is tomorrow’s gig, they may not realize there’s still one tonight – happening right now! This represents a lost customer.
Is this a function of the widget or the calendar? How can I tweak it so events show up until they’re over?
