I am pretty new to WordPress and I was just helping a non-tech friend with his blog to pretty it up, change the layout, etc… I was using the editor but I need to dig deeper into the code as well as doing this in a secure way.

Someone told me I should set up a local environment and the way to get the files and upload the new changes would be via FTP.

So I started following the WordPress guide to set up FileZilla for the site.

An FTP account was created in the hosting and I connected to the ftp service with FileZilla correctly, here’s the log:

    Status: Resolving address of https://ftp.xxxxxxxxxxx.com
    Status: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxxx.xxxx:21…
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message…
    Status: Initializing TLS…
    Status: Verifying certificate…
    Status: TLS connection established.
    Status: Logged in
    Status: Retrieving directory listing…
Status: Directory listing of “/” successful

However the remote site just shows an empty directoy. Well not empy, it has a .ftpquota file. I have made sure the files exist in the server, so it’s not empty.

I have spent hours trying to figure our why I can’t retrieve these files via FTP and I have tried pretty much everything I’ve read about.

    Does anybody know what’s wrong?

Yeah… First-timer issue. The ftp account path was set to a subfolder instead of public_html.
