• Yesterday, after checking the compatibility of all of the active plugins we’re using, I finally updated one of the websites I manage to version 4.4.1 (online, I’ve never used any of the desktop versions of WordPress for any of my sites).

After doing so, I checked the website (envarch.net) and for the most part it seemed to be fine. I did notice, however, that when I clicked on an ‘event’ for more information I got a 404 message. Our events are managed through a plugin, so my first thought was that, despite checking, there must be a conflict between that and the new WP version. When I tried to check it for errors though, I discovered that when I now try to log in to the back end of the website, all I get is a blank white page.

Later in the day, I heard from one of the editors on the site who, it transpires, was editing an event at around the same time that I was updating the website. I now think this is the most likely cause of the problem.

So, in summary, apart from links dictated by one plugin, our website is still up and running fine – neither me nor any of the other administrators/editors associated with the site can now access the backend anymore though. Is this something that WordPress can fix remotely? I’ve looked round the help site for contact details and haven’t found anything so I’m resorting to the forums in the hope that someone checks them.

  • It seems that, there is some file permission issue on your server.

Kindly take a backup of your plugins and delete those and check the backend. After that put back one after another to find the culprit.

Hi, thanks for replying. I backed up the entire site shortly before updating the backend. At the moment though, I cannot access the backend (it’s just a blank white screen) so I don’t even know how I could restore this if I wanted to.

Sorry if I’m missing something obvious here but although I’ve been tasked with the responsibility of this website I have zero experience of website design/programming. Other WordPress sites I maintain are exclusively ‘blogs (actually mostly managed through the outdated Windows Live Writer).

You can do that file browser.

Kindly ask your hosting, they may guide you here.

The files are located under Your_Installation/wp-contnet/plugins/

Can someone possibly help me? I simply know how to update our website… thougt I should update plug ins that seemed okay then went to update the version and my entire website is completely and utterly GONE. I am so upset This is the biggest week of the year for us.

Any help would be appreciated. It won’t even recognize my user id or password.
