Several errors (bulk apply, bulk un-apply, single apply)

First of all, thank you for this plugin. I’ve tested it and was sure it suited my demand to manage watermarking my almost 1800 images I have on my own WP installation.
In “mediathek” view I’ve selected the images that were to be watermarked (most, but not all) and then selected “Add Watermark” from the drop down form. For the first eight pages in mediathek it worked like a charm, but suddenly it stopped working: The page loaded after I fired the “Apply” button, but after having loaded the to be watermarked images remained untouched and watermark-less. I’ve got no error output.
When trying to apply the watermark just to one single image, it worked fine on the first pages, but from page nine onward it didn’t work. After clicking on “Add Watermark” I’ve got the error output “An error has occurred.”
I tried to bulk un-watermark all previously watermarked images. After 2 % progress the process stopped with error output “An error has occurred.” Nevertheless, the time counter went on anyway.
I’ve checked file permissions in wp-content/ew_backup/ and, to give it a try, I’ve CHMODed them to 777, but to no avail.
I’ve tried to apply several other PHP versions (older and newer than 5.6 which is currently standard on my server), but to no avail, too.
That is, I’m clueless how to proceed here and keep using this plugin further.
