Plugins not in ‘administration’- newbie

    I’m new to WordPress, blogging and programming (got lost back in the days of Pascal. I was able to install WP 2.2.2, messed up upgrading it to 2.2.3 (install4free: thank you folk!) and back up again… except that I can’t get to see any of the plugins (except Askismet and Hello Dolly) where I should activate them. I went through the readme files, transferred to the hosts server (FileZilla) and can see them in their proper place WordPress > contents > plugins > (each plugin). I set permissions, 755 for foldders, 644 files. Missing something, probably simple – but what? – NITWIT
