Random post from a single category in sidebar?

  • I’d like to post a random post from a single category in my sidebar. (Like a quotes widget, but from a category.) Failing that, I’d like to post the most recent post from a single category in my sidebar. (If you’re curious, it’s a category with relevant book reviews.)

    I think I’m about ready to learn to hack a plug-in, if anybody wants to coach me through it. ?? I have the Category Recent Posts widget, but it only shows the title of the posts. I want the whole thing, including image.

    Any advice will be most appreciated!

    Random Category Plugin

    I’d like to post a specific post in the sidebar. Can I use this plugin if I:

    create a special category
    assign the post I want to that category
    assign no other posts to that category
    to change the post I change the categories on the posts so the new post I want is the only post in the category

    Is there another plugin which will do this for me?
    I am going to try my idea to see if it will work.

    My idea worked.

    If anyone knows of a plugin which removes the randomness directly please let me know.
