Nav items hover color control

I can’t read the nav items when I hover over them in my menu in Unite theme. The white items turn to black and, with the dark purple background, they can’t be read. I would like them to stay white in colour when hovering over them and then to turn black or dark once clicked as they background menu colour lightens and again the items can’t be read.
