• I am very new to WordPress, so please excuse me if I am posting this in the wrong place. My websites are running very slow; it takes a while to load. I have checked with Gtmetrix and with Google Pagespeed, but I am afraid that I can’t figure out what the problem might be. I have tried disabling all plugins, but the issue does not go away. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. My websites are in Spanish….

  • There are a few things that could cause your website to run slower than it should. I would recommend trying the options below.

    • Compression – This is a little minor in less you have more than 2 or 3 images on a page. Either way you should get into the habit of compressing your images BEFORE you upload them to your website. Also I would suggest making them jpg and as small as possible. If you have a bunch of images that you need to compress on your website then there are some plugins out there. I would recommend Compress JPEG & PNG images.
    • Cache – The most popular way to go about cache is to use a plugin like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. Although, downloading the plugin and activating it doesn’t just magically change your page speed. I would suggest checking out these two tutorials for WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache. They provide great information for setting the plugins up properly to get the best results. Note that there are other cache options out there that are not listed. You can check them out on the WordPress directory.
    • CloudFlare – I don’t know if you use CloudFlare or not but if you do I would suggest deactivating it and seeing if it helps. Also sometimes a good purge of the cache on CloudFlare can help.
    • Plugins – Plugins can be a thing that can really weight down your website. How many plugins do you have installed? I would suggest using the P3 plugin to see what plugins are slowing down your website the most. Sometimes there are multiple other plugins out there that you can use as alternatives if the one that you are currently using is slowing your site down.
    • Theme – This is minor but a very select few themes can slow down your website. I would suggest switching to the Twenty Fifteen or Twenty Sixteen theme to see if it speeds up your website. Note that when you switch themes and then switch back to the theme that you were using you can lose settings and may need to set the primary menu and sidebar widgets again.
    • Host – If all else fails then I would suggest contacting your host provider. It could be a problem on their end or they may be able to help with troubleshooting. Also if you are contacting your host provider then you should make sure that you are on the most recent PHP version (5.6 is the current I think). Also you may want to look into upgrading your plan to provide better server speed.

Let me know if any of the above were able to help you solve the problem! If not then I can give you some more suggestions.

Matthew… Thank you for your quick response…

    Regarding your suggestions;

Compression – I use Gzip, and also WP Smush for the images.

Cache – I use WP Super Cache; Leverage Browser Caching Ninja

CloudFlare – I do not use it because it kills Adsense revenue.. I am using Jetpack by WordPress.com, someone told me it was good for images and so forth.

Plugins – I downloaded and installed the plugin you mentioned, but I have no clue as to what it all means or what I could do. (Sorry… I am very new at this).

Theme – I am using Sahifa from tie labs, it is supposed to be very good.

Host – they are both on separate VPS…

Compression – I use Gzip, and also WP Smush for the images.

    Good!

Cache – I use WP Super Cache; Leverage Browser Caching Ninja

Good as well! Have you tried following a guide like this to set it up properly?

CloudFlare – I do not use it because it kills Adsense revenue.. I am using Jetpack by WordPress.com, someone told me it was good for images and so forth.

If you are not using CloudFlare then it is not the problem.

Plugins – I downloaded and installed the plugin you mentioned, but I have no clue as to what it all means or what I could do. (Sorry… I am very new at this).

P3 will tell you which plugins are slowing down your site the most. You will need to run a scan and then it will show it all in a pie chart.

Host – they are both on separate VPS…

Which hosting company are you with?

I am using Bluehost VPS Ultimate… On the pie chart, what appears to be taking must of the space is “Jetpack by WordPress.com” it is 44% and load time is 0.5416 secs… But I don’t know what that means…

Both your websites have good server response times which makes me believe that what is slowing your sites down is not Bluehost.

You websites don’t load too slow, I am loading them in about 5 seconds.

When did you notice that your website was loading slow? Was it after you updated something?

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

For me they load about the same time as for you… Sometimes a little longer… But the results from Google Page Speed and GTMetrix are not so good, especially for mobile devices, and that traffic amounts to about 44% of my visits. I have checked the speed using my mobile devices, and the load time is longer than 5 secs… Also I conducted a survey, and the main complaint seems to be based around page load time….

As far as noticing… These websites were originally Joomla, and I converted them to WordPress… After conversion is when I started seeing load time issues…

Well if you look at the Google Page Speed is shows that the Bluehost server is responding fast, and you have a good hosting package so that shouldn’t be the issue.

I mean the website is loading pretty fast for me. The page that takes the longest to load is the home page, besides that everything is loading in about 2.5 seconds for me.

Your ads could possibly be slowing things down. I don’t know if it is took much trouble to ask for you to disable your ads for a minute to see if that is causing your pages to load slower.

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

Ok.. I have done as you asked… I have disabled all ads.

https://www.centraldesermones.com/ is loading really fast for me now. What do you use for your ads?

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

I use Adsense (3 ads)… Yield Select (2 ads).. Infolinks (1 ad + the links)

In google I keep seeing this:

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
    Leverage browser caching

    Mobile side I see this:

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
    Reduce server response time

If you disable and enable them is there one or two sets of ads that you find are slowing your site down more?

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

I can try doing that… Let me check

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

Can’t figure this out… All ads are set to “async”.. When first test it is horrible… You test a few second later, and the test is better… I have activated all ads again…

When first test it is horrible… You test a few second later, and the test is better…

Wired. Could be cache that is causing that to happen.

    Thread Starter centrald777

    (@centrald777)

What can I do about the cache??? I do see that Google pagespeed indicates to Leverage browser caching for the following cacheable resources… but I am afraid that I don’t know what that means. And GTmetrix this morning is horrible… It is indicating 24 secs load time….
