    Sirs,

I am sure I have done something daft, but I can see my website with many of the pages I have created. In the “editor”, I can see all the pages I have created, and with content.

However, many of the pages that were visible, no longer show up from the menus. If I look at the link when my mouse hovers over the link, it is the same link as the page I see in the editor.

When I search for the pages, they will show in the search, and when I click on the link, it reports an error.

What have I done wrong? I feel such a numpty!

    Many thanks,

    Yours faithfully,

    Ian Smith

Is the error 404 Not Found?

    (@phystusadmin)

Effectively, yes – it actually says “Not Found

Apologies, but the page you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help.“

Yet the page displaying that message has the right url -according to the edited page. Some menu items are displayed and others not. I’m at a loss!

    Many thanks for your help.

Try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically edit the .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

    James,

I just tried to save the permalinks, but it made no difference.

If it helps, the website is at phystus.co.uk and all the links were working a couple of days ago.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi,

Not to overtake James Huff response; I would rename the .htaccess file to like old.htaccess; then go and re-save the permalinks in the dashboard, that way you end up with a fresh .htaccess file vs a bloated one with things that might still possibly not be removed even with an update.

Sorry James Huff, just thought I’d drop my two cents on this ?? if I may.

No apology necessary, that would have been my next suggestion anyway. ??

Ah, thank you both for your help. I just did a search of my hard drive which came back without a hit – but then again I use Ubuntu – I will search online for clues meanwhile for its location!

Is this a locally hosted installation on your own computer, or are you online at a hosting provider?

The site is hosted by a professional ISP. From that, I guess the .htaccess file will be on the server. Is that something that I will be able to ftp into and see?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Yes, .htaccess is a file on the server. It will be in the same directory as your site’s main index.php and wp-login.php files.

Depending on your FTP client, you may need to configure it to view invisible/hidden files in order to see .htaccess.

    @james,

    If you download FileZilla FTP client; you can do the following;

1.) Start FileZilla, and then select the Server menu.
2.) Select Force Showing Hidden Files.

Hope that helps. FileZilla is available here; https://filezilla-project.org/download.php

Opps, that was for @ian not @james, sorry ??

Sorry about the delay. Sadly, having renamed the .htaccess file to old.htaccess, it seems that now the pages that weren’t displaying, but had the theme, now just show a blank page – with no error or theme! Should I rename the file back again?
Any other clues – sorry to be such a pain!

    (@macmanx)

No, keep it renamed, but now repeat what you tried earlier:

Try re-saving your permalink structure at Settings/Permalinks in your admin panel. If WordPress cannot automatically create a new .htaccess file, it will provide manual instructions after saving.

I saved the permalinks, but there is no .htaccess file. Could it be located in more than one place? I am looking under “/clickandbuilds/Test”, which has the wp-login.php file.

At the top of the page it says the settings have been saved – but I went to a higher level directory and returned to ensure I had a directory refresh.
