One of my sites had a bunch of characters injected into each post. I had to go in manually and revise all the posts. Luckily I had under 100 posts. This has happened to me before on a another blog.

The text looked like this and frequently replaced any apostrophe (‘) or quotes (“”). Or the code would appear at the end of sentences.

    a€|
    ?
    a€?

My question is.. how can I prevent this in the future? Does anyone know what might have caused this?

When you add a new post, do you type directly into the editor in WordPress or are you using another program such as Microsoft Word to type and then copy into WordPress? If you are using another editor, the easiest thing may be to copy and paste all your text into a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++; this will remove all formatting and prevent quotes from being converted into those weird characters.

Yea I thought about that. I used to use Scrivener (mac) to edit all my posts. Now I use Desk… but it crashes a lot so I’m just going to use the WordPress dash exclusively at this point. Editing that many posts is hell.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays.

For the posts you already have, you could try using a plugin to search and replace those characters with the quote/apostrophe. It would probably be a good idea to make a fresh backup before doing that just to be on the safe side. That way at least you wouldn’t have to manually edit all of the posts.
