Error updating themes and plugins under WP 4.4

  • Developing a website locally under MAMP, I get the following error message when I attempt to update any theme or plugin.

    An error occurred while updating [NAME]: Download failed. SSL certificate problem, verify that the CA cert is OK. Details: error:14090086:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed

    This problem appears to date back to the update to WP 4.4.

    I’m running WP under MAMP 1.9.6 and OS X 10.5.8.

    I’ve restarted my Mac, reinstalled MAMP and WP, all to no avail.

    Please don’t suggest that I update my OS or any of my software, as I would have to buy a new computer first, and that is not a possibility at this time.
