OMG…. theme auto-swap: why? Bug or hacking attack?

Nope, not a bug and not a hacking attempt. The most common reason for this happening is that the ‘current theme’ is buggy.

Its frequently seen on sites where the user has created their own theme, such as on your site.

Chances are that WP doesnt like how you are managing the various stylesheets you are using. Just a stab in the dark.

Deactivate what feature? the fact that wp goes back to the default theme? The oft suggested solution is to remove the normal default theme, and rename the directory your theme is in to defualt, that way when the theme goes back to the default theme, it will go back to the one you want.

Ive never tried it, I have never needed to, my theme has never changed unexpectedly. Your mileage may vary, and I dont offer any promises with the advice.

I turned on the error logging on my hosting, maybe I will see the errors that cause this tomorrow.

I will also follow your advice of the default renaming, however, I’m very surprised that there isn’t another way to bypass this or to deactivate this feature.

Just another “shot in the dark” question. Is your customer by any chance, using the “WordPress Mobile Edition” plugin to enable viewing of their site on a mobile device? If they are and haven’t put the mobile “theme” that’s bundled with the plugin into the “themes” directory then every time someone tries to access your customer’s site with a mobile device, WordPress won’t find it and will revert to the Default theme.

It’s a long shot but it’s surprising how many people with just your problem come back and say “that was it!”.
