I have now experienced a problem with many of my websites that I cannot seem to figure out. I like using Safari, but have a real issue with it.

Whenever I have built a site (in WordPress, styling various themes) if I add SSL and make everything https, I suddenly experience issues from my Safari browser.

It’s difficult to demonstrate because sometimes the page loads fine, no problem. But other times it sits and tries to connect for a long period of time. Refreshing doesn’t work. It needs to go through its long timeout process before I finally get a message that reads:

    “Safari Can’t Open the Page
Safari can’t open the page “…” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.”

After I finally get this page, I can refresh and the page will 100% load the next time.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world if it were just my computer, I can use Chrome no problem, but I have cleared my history, cache, cookies a million times.

I’m not convinced it is just my computer, because I have seen it happen on another Safari browser, however that person had also logged in and edited the site at some point, so maybe that has something to do with it? But even if that’s the case, it’s still a problem, as some of our sites use Buddypress, so there are lots of people logging in, and it’s guaranteed that a portion of them use Safari.

It doesn’t matter whether SSL was on from the beginning or added later. Either way, the problem exists and only goes away by removing the SSL and switching everything back to http.

For a long time I thought it was related to WooCommerce, since it happened to so many WooCommerce sites, but I have just made a new SSL site with no e-commerce portion at all, but still getting the issue randomly. (Again, sometimes it seems fine).

I host all of the sites with Siteground, if that’s helpful?

I seriously cannot believe I am the only person experiencing these issues, but I cannot find any info about it other than a few unanswered threads. It’s time this problem was solved!!!

Any insight anyone could provide would be helpful. I know it’s difficult without being able to test, but it literally never seems to happen when I try to show anyone anyways… Thank you.

Very odd, what’s the URL of the site with the problem?

    I guess I don’t want these posted here indefinitely…

Ok, there isn’t much I can do without the URL.

I have been experiencing the exact same problems with Safar/SSL on sites hosted by SiteGround — and I’m not using WordPress. I think it is a problem with Safari (at least on OS X) and how it stores/handles SSL communications with SiteGround’s servers and/or caching or cloud technology. I’ve contacted SG support in the past and they haven’t been very useful, but perhaps if you open a ticket as well it will get more attention.

Very interesting. I have opened several tickets with them in the past about it, but they’ve always just claimed they couldn’t recreate it. I may direct them to this thread…

@700×23 would you be willing to share your affected site’s URL?

You should be able to reproduce the problem by going to https://goatdata.com/timeouttest.php

The script contains a single line:
    <a href="<? echo $_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME'] ?>">Reload Page</a>

Click on “Reload Page” after around 2 minutes and it should just hang there. What’s strange is that an entry is not made to the access log for the request that times out, so it seems like some sort of problem at the SSL level. Through testing I determined the timeout range to be between around 90 seconds and 4 to 5 minutes.

Ok, I’m not 100% sure what I should expect there, but the page loaded immediately for me, and reloaded immediately upon subsequent clicks, under Firefox 43.0.2, Chrome 47.0.2526.106, and Safari 9.0.2.

    Using Safari on OS X,

    1. Load the page. (https://goatdata.com/timeouttest.php)
    2. Wait for 2 minutes.
    3. Click on Reload Page.

When you click the 2nd time, the browser should just hang indefinitely. There isn’t a problem with Chrome or Firefox — just Safari.

I see what you mean now, but considering you were able to reproduce the problem with something that is not WordPress, I recommend following up with this at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/safari

(I was posting for Virtual Monk to let him know it is a Safari/SiteGround issue as opposed to WordPress)

    Ah, excellent. ??

@virtualmonk, please email me at [removed]. I am having problems getting SiteGround to believe there is a problem with their system. More voices would help give me a louder voice.

And if you could reply when you’ve done that, so I can remove the above email address, that would be great. ??

Responded. Thanks! I don’t know how long these threads normally get left open, but it would be nice if it remained open for some time, so if others are experiencing the same issue, they could voice their thoughts. Thanks.
