• Hello! I’ve set up a number of news aggregation sites and am having trouble publicizing the posts onto Twitter (and Google+). The frustrating thing is that the sites are all set up with the same plug-ins and settings, as well as the same version of WordPress (4.4) and one of three different themes – Best Magazine, Twenty Twelve, and ‘The Newswire’

We thought that it might be because of the ‘W3 Total Cache’ plug-in, but some of the sites with that are publicizing fine and others aren’t.

Facebook appears to be working fine for most of the sites.

We’ve checked through the trouble shooting section, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. We’ve also checked this page: https://twitter.com/settings/applications and it’s shown up fine on there.

If anyone else has had this problem and got it sorted, please let us know.

Hi there! Could you post your site URLs here, so I can have a look? Please be sure to let me know which sites are working as expected, and which are not. It would also be helpful if you could provide links to specific posts that have failed to Publicize.

Just let me know, and we can go from there!

Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it.

https://dagensnyhed.us/ is updating on Twitter every few hours, though it should be doing so every ten minutes to half an hour.

As an example, this post – https://dagensnyhed.us/lone-vaelger-selv-om-hun-vil-indlaegges-pa-psykiatrisk/ went up on the site a little under half an hour ago, but the most recent post to be publicized on Twitter was 2 hours ago – and the one before that, was 8 hours ago.

Dagensnyhed is using W3 Total Cache and the Best Magazine theme. It’s publicizing to Facebook regularly and frequently.

https://svenska.us/ hasn’t updated on Twitter or Facebook since December 14. From this post onwards – https://svenska.us/grekiska-flygplatser-i-tysk-regi/ – the site just stops publicizing.

Svenska is using W3 Total Cache and the Newswire theme.

https://ehtitarjous.net/ appears to be working fine on Twitter – it’s publicizing on time and as regularly as the posts go up. It’s also working fine on Facebook.

It’s using the Best Magazine theme, but isn’t using W3 Total Cache.

https://dagens-nyhet.us/ is working fine on Facebook, and is technically publicizing to Twitter, but is only doing so in short bursts. Every couple of days it’ll publicize maybe two or three posts, a few hours apart from each other, and then it’ll stop working again for another two days or so.

https://dagens-nyhet.us/tror-sevan-marine-kan-bli-solgt/ and https://dagens-nyhet.us/bygger-flere-hurtigladere-langs-hovedveiene-i-sor/ are both examples of posts that didn’t publicize.

It’s using Best Magazine, but isn’t using W3 Total Cache.

https://auctionmalta.com/ is working fine on both Facebook and Twitter.

It’s using the Best Magazine theme and W3 Total Cache.

https://urnews24.com/ hasn’t publicized to Facebook since November 25, and isn’t working on Twitter at all.

Some recent posts that haven’t been publicized: https://urnews24.com/million-migrants-enter-europe-in-2015/ and https://urnews24.com/sao-paulo-fire-wrecks-rail-station/

It’s using the Twenty Twelve theme and W3 Total Cache.

Thanks for the additional information! I tested Jetpack’s connection on each site, and they all seem to be properly connected, except for svenska.us. Can you try reconnecting Jetpack on that site?

For the others, I would suggest completely removing the existing Publicize connections. Please completely follow these steps to do so:
    https://jetpack.me/support/publicize/facebook/#reconnecting-facebook
    https://jetpack.me/support/publicize/twitter/#reconnecting-twitter

Then, visit https://wordpress.com/sharing and add the connections from that page. After doing so, see if the issue persists.

Please let me know how that works for you!

Thank you very much for the help Ryan, I really appreciate it. We’ve managed to get Dagens-Nyhet and URnews24 working fine, so that’s four out of six sorted out completely! ??

Unfortunately, Svenska still isn’t working at all.

I went back to the troubleshooting section to try and get why facebook isn’t working. We checked the source code and found that the posts on Svenska are receiving Jetpack’s Open Graph Tags, but they’re still not publicizing. I put the url of one such post (this one: https://svenska.us/konstprotest-vid-stadshuset-vandaliserad/ ) through the Facebook Open Graph Object Debugger, and it came back with the following error:

‘Error parsing input URL, no data was cached, or no data was scraped.’

‘fb:app_id hasn’t been included in the meta tags. Specify the app ID so that stories shared to Facebook will be properly attributed to the app. Alternatively, app_id can be set in url when open the share dialog. Otherwise, the default app id( 966242223397117 ) will be assigned.’

It sounds like we’re making progress! Svenska appears to be properly connected at the moment, which is a good sign. However, I don’t see any record of the post you linked to in the Publicize logs. That makes me think that the post wasn’t sent to Facebook, so the error message you received in the debugger might not be the actual problem.

Could you tell me a bit more about the publishing flow that you use on Svenska? Do you use schedule posts ahead of time, or use any plugins to assist in your flow? And could you temporarily disable the W3 Total Cache plugin and see if that has any affect on your next post?

    Thanks for the reply.

Svenska is using Cybersyn to grab the RSS feeds from several Swedish news sources. We created a manual cronjob for it, but the site itself is publishing posts fine. The problem is publicizing them to Facebook and Twitter.

The only plug-ins we have that are somewhat connected to the publishing flow, are ‘Fix Duplicates’ (which we use to prevent duplicates on the site) and Jetpack for the publicizing.

Thanks for the additional info. I suspect your publishing flow might be responsible for the trouble.

Could you try creating and publishing a post directly from your Dashboard without using Cybersyn to grab an RSS feed? Then, see if that post Publicizes to your Twitter and Facebook account.

This will allow us to determine if that is indeed the issue.

We have just tried publishing manually, and it has worked.

There must be something wrong with Cybersyn in this case, but it seems to have worked fine on the other sites, such as Dagens-Nyhet.

We’ve tried changing the theme for Svenska to match the others, and will see how that effects things.
