• Since upgrading to WP 4.4 I can no longer paste text into the editor in Chrome. I get the “Aw, snap! Something went wrong with this webpage.” error.

I have tried researching solutions, turning off all plugins, etc. to no avail.

Admittedly, I can get the paste function to work in the new MS Edge browser (I haven’t tried others yet) so this may be a browser issue rather than a WP issue but I’d rather not have to switch browsers to edit the site.

    Any ideas?

Update: I tried disabling all of the Chrome extensions. Now I can *occasionally* paste text. I thought I might be able to isolate the issue to a single extension but I still get the error about 2 out of every three tries.

Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. No luck.

I am getting exactly the same problem. I did a google search just now specifically to see if anyone had opened a post about this bug. Yes it coincided with WP 4.4. The problem is by far the worst with Chrome but same thing will happen with other browsers too. The more text I am pasting (in my case tables) the more likely the problem. In chrome it is unworkable, though. The moment you paste it goes to “Aw Snap”, not even when you save. It happens when you paste.

Ok, I just read the master post by the moderator of known bugs and saw this:

Canvas Theme (for WooCommerce) – It seems to be throwing error in category-template.php on line 1158 and we’re not sure why yet. This has been reported upstream.

I am using Canvas theme from woothemes. No idea if that is relevant or a red herring for this “Aw Snap pasting bug”.

@johnhorneguitar – what theme are you using?

I updated theme to this version: “2015.12.14 – version 5.9.15” and did not solve the issue. So this error may not relate to Canvas theme, but rather the wordpress update.

Well, glad to know it’s not just me.

I recently switched themes. I was originally using a child theme of Twenty Eleven but I am now using the Sparkling theme. The problem persists either way.

After doing further experimentation I’ve discovered that there seems to be a particular page that this is a problem for – I can generally paste into posts and pages. I am going to try to create a new version of this page and see what happens.

I was able to copy and paste the contents of the page into a new page – and there’s a fair amount of content – but once it was published the Aw Snap! error came back even when pasting only a single word.

BTW the page that is giving me the error is:
    https://www.johnhorneguitar.com/performance/performance-archive/

After updating to 4.4, I updated my regular WP blog with some new photos and text. After posting it, I went to edit, and now get “Aw snap” whenever I click in the post. I can’t do a thing. I can still get into older posts (not yet “touched” by 4.4). I can still edit all posts in Safari. But Chrome is useless–and I’ve used Chrome for all WordPress activity since I started blogging in January. I cleared browsing data in Chrome–no effect. I’ve restarted my MacBook Air–no effect. I’d love to hear about a solution to this problem, but until then I guess Chrome is forcing me to use Safari.

I’ve had similar issues with certain code, mainly ad codes. I don’t remember specifics anymore, but it had something to do with the page trying to auto render the text as opposed to just being able to paste and then press the save button. Maybe there’s a way to have it not process the javascript or something similar on paste? HTH

My workaround is to use firefox and then only to paste in the html ‘text’ window. Even with firefox I get problems in the ‘visual’ edit window. This bug needs mending.

I am also having this problem. It started today not directly after I upgraded to WP 4.4. I’ve done a lot of work in it since then, but no large amounts of copying and pasting. I am also using the Canvas theme.

    Canvas theme: not updated recently
    WP: updated to 4.4 yesterday

I only started getting the error today after copying and pasting a very large amount of text with SVG code in it. Now pasting even a small amount of text is throwing the error. Using Chrome.

    Hi,

Where are you copying text from, are we talking Microsoft Word documents here, those are usually full of terrible terrible proprietary markup that they use them selves that the editor tries to strip out, if you copy massive amounts of text formatted like this at once you are very likely to hit memory limitations of your browser which can invoke errors like this.

The issue with the Canvas theme isn’t related to this at all though, so you don’t need to worry about that bit ??

But yes, it would be handy to know where the pasted text originates from, and how large the text bits are (also if you already have a large post and try to copy parts in, the parser still has to run over the content when you paste it in so it -can- be invoked at that point as well)

I also broke it down into small bits and pasted it into the plain text editor on my Mac and it still has the same error. Even when I’m only pasting one line of HTML, no SVG.

My text is not from Word. It is copied from a text file only and I have been doing the same thing for several years – yet the problem only starts now. @clare12345 use my workaround of firefox and then only pasting into the ‘text’ window.

@ross99 I switched to Safari temporarily. That seems to work fine. I wish Chrome would start working.
